Winter weather can be harsh, and operating a semi-truck in these conditions presents serious challenges. With more than 156,000 crashes and 1,300 fatalities each year due to snowy or icy roads, safety must always come first. Fortunately, there are many ways to reduce risk and stress on winter roads. Below are the top winter driving tips every CDL A truck driver should follow:

1. Prioritize Thorough Pre-Trip Inspections

Pre-trip inspections matter year-round, but they are especially crucial in winter. Before each shift:

  • Confirm all lights are working.
  • Inspect your brakes.
  • Check coolant and antifreeze levels.
  • Ensure windshield wipers and washer fluid are winter-ready.
  • Consider using winter or snow tires.
  • Check tire tread, pressure, and chains.
  • Review weather conditions from the National Weather Service.
  • Make sure you have an ice scraper available

2. Clear All Ice and Snow

Remove snow and ice from windshields, windows, mirrors, and lights. Good visibility is essential for both you and the drivers around you.

3. Use Extra Caution on Bridges

Bridges freeze more quickly and stay icy longer than other road surfaces. Slow down and avoid sudden lane changes, braking, or acceleration when crossing them.

4. Stay Alert Around Snowplows

Snowplows improve road safety but can also create hazards if you’re not careful. Keep a safe distance, avoid passing on the right, and be aware that visibility around plows is often limited. Adjust your driving whenever plows are nearby.

5. Maintain a Long Following Distance

Stopping takes significantly longer on snowy or icy roads—sometimes up to 10 times longer. Maintain at least a 15-second following distance and always plan an escape route if conditions worsen.

6. Avoid Driving in Packed Snow Ruts

Avoid the ruts left by other vehicles, as compacted snow and ice in these tracks can cause you to lose control.

7. Brake Early and Accelerate Slowly

Intersections can be slick. Start braking earlier than usual and apply the brakes gently. Accelerate gradually to prevent skidding or jackknifing.

8. Reduce Your Speed

Slowing down is one of the most effective winter safety measures. Reduced speeds improve traction and help you maintain control.

9. Disable the Engine Brake on Slippery Roads

Using the engine brake in wet or icy conditions can cause your drive wheels to lose traction. Turn it off to reduce the risk of sliding.

10. Practice Defensive Driving

Stay highly alert, anticipate hazards, and adjust to changing road conditions. If conditions become unsafe, pull over and wait. Communicate with your operations team or customers to ensure safety remains the top priority.

By following these essential winter driving tips, you can better navigate hazardous conditions and stay safe throughout the season.
